DIY Hoop Tutorial

By: Amy Atlas, in DIY and Templates

In case you missed it on Friday, you must check out the Vintage Sewing Party guest dessert feature from Christine at Pure Joy Events.  One of our favorite details was the embroidered hoops which Christine so creatively used in lieu of place cards.  We are sew excited to have Christine back today for an exclusive tutorial for creating those hoops.  This crafty tutorial will not only yield a great visual impact, but the materials are also inexpensive and accessible.  You can find the felt, thread and buttons at Michaels and the hoops here.  It is also a great activity to get your kids and/or friends interested in sewing.

For this project, you will need 6″ wooden embroidery hoops, 9″ x 12″ sheets of eco-felt, embroidery thread, and small buttons {see above}.  First, print out the initial from your computer and cut it out.  Christine used a 300 point size Commercial Script font that she downloaded from the web, but you can use any font.  Freehand draw a small flower, a larger flower, and leaves on a sheet of paper and cut those out as well. Trace the initial, flowers and leaves on the felt and cut them out.

Cut the sandstone colored felt into a 9″ x 9″ square, then wrap it over the wooden hoop.

Finally, simply stitch the initial, flowers, leaves and button using embroidery thread.

Look at how pretty it looks as place settings!  These can make wonderful favors for guests to leave with as well.  Enjoy!
