Jennifer at Honeycomb Events sent us this “gentleman’s” party that she styled with her brother for Jennifer’s son’s birthday. Channeling the Rat Pack in the 60′s, they created a masculine vibe for her lil guy’s first celebration. Jennifer incorporated Houndstooth and plaid patterns for the cupcake wrappers, bow tie cookies, and printables. She also created a tufted leather backdrop to hide a large television. Upon arrival, guests went to a “grooming station” and were fitted with bow ties. The lil tots left with a bubble pipe and vintage candies. This was definitely a party fit for a gentleman!

5…4...3...2…1..Blast Off!  This party is every future astronaut’s dream. Debbie from Studio Cake in Australia created this party for her son’s 5th birthday. Her son is crazy about space and rockets so Debbie put together a space themed party. Sweet treats included a rocket shaped caramel mud cake, cupcakes, alien oreo cakepops (we love), gingerbread cookies and jellies all made by Studio Cake.  Debbie made astronaut survival kits so the lil astronauts were prepared for their space journey. This table was out of this universe!  Scroll down to see the vendor credits.

TOMATO TART VS. LOBSTER QUICHE

Although the tomato is actually considered a fruit because of its lower sugar content than many other fruits, many deem it a vegetable for culinary purposes. New Jersey has designated the tomato it’s state vegetable. The tomato tart is a savory treat made with pastry dough, tomato, olive oil and parmesan cheese.

Maine is the biggest producer of Lobster in the US. When trying to think of a savory treat for The Sweeterbowl, we knew that Lobster had to be included in some way as it is what comes to mind when we hear New England. The quiche is made with cream custard made with imported Swiss cheese, eggs, half-half, and seasonings. The perfect savory treat on a cold Maine winter’s day.

APPLE MUFFIN VS. WHOOPIE PIE

In 1976, New York officiated The Apple as the state fruit. It isn’t called The Big Apple for nothing. New York comes in #2 in the US for apple production. We like a good ol’ gala apple but we LOVE a delicious apple muffin. The mixture of apple, sugar, cinnamon and nuts all packaged in a miniature cake reminds me of baking in my grandma’s kitchen and just feels very American to me.

Both Pennsylvania and Maine claim to be the birthplace of the Whoopie Pie. While the blueberry pie is the official state dessert of Maine, only Maine has deemed the Whoopie Pie it’s official treat. Sometimes referred to as a giant oreo, the whoopie pie is two cake-like cookies with a creamy, frosting like filling sandwiched between them. There are many stories as to how the whoopie pie got its name.  One story says that Amish children would scream “Whoopie” when they found these sweet treats packed in their lunch boxes. Add an ice cold glass of milk and we’d be saying it as well.

We’re going into halftime with the Giants up by 14. During halftime, we all have to eat, right?  Here is a fun football spread that would be perfect for the Superbowl. This post came to us from Debi at A Perfect Event. We love the  DIY football field holding up the cookies. Both teams were represented with savory treats. Manhattan Clam and New England Chowder (perfect!), Burger Shack’s famous Klondike Beer Shakes, NY Deli minis, lasagna muffins and mac & cheese muffins. Sweet treats included sugar cookies, ice cream sandwiches dipped in chocolate shakes & chocolate covered bacon. White tape served as the yard lines on the DIY tablecloth. Great job! CANNOLI’S FROM LITTLE ITALY VS. BLUEBERRY PIE’S FROM MAINE

We may be a little biased, but NYC definitely has the best cannoli’s in the US. If you have never been down to Little Italy, you almost feel transported to a little Italian village. Cannoli’s got their start in Palermo. The singular, cannolo (or cannolu in Sicilian), means “little tube”. They were historically prepared as a treat during Carnival season. The American variation usually contains ricotta, but mascarpone is a less common alternative. Sometimes the filling is a simple custard of sugar, milk, and cornstarch. Top it off with powdered sugar or chocolate and some whipped cream and we are talking Il Paradiso!

First eaten by American settlers, Blueberry pie is still a popular dessert all over the US and around the world. Blueberry Pie made with Maine blueberries is the official state dessert of Maine. The flaky crust and sugar sweetened blueberries are sure to bring back a sense of nostalgia.

We have not written a “Sweet Origins” in a while and since Superbowl XLVI is Sunday, we thought it would be fun to play a game where we learn about the sweet origins of the desserts from the Superbowl team areas and pit them against each other! A Superbowl of Sweets so to speak or “Sweeterbowl.” So today, we are pitting some traditional New York/New Jersey sweets against some New England favorites. Since the Giants are a New York team..but play in New Jersey, we thought it would neighborly to include them.

NEW YORK CHEESECAKE VS. BOSTON CREME PIE

Last year we did a Sweet Origins on Cheesecake. By the 1900’s, New York City was in LOVE with cheesecake. It is so fitting for us too. Cheesecake can be dressed up with fruity delicacies to be elegant and demure (like the upper east side)..or messy and crunchy with the addition of syrup and nuts (like the East Village).

Created by an Armenian French chef at Boston’s Parker House Hotel, Boston Creme Pie is the perfect combination of sponge cake, vanilla pudding and chocolate. The Boston Creme Pie was declared the official dessert of Massachusetts in 1996.

Today is all about Valentine’s Day. Sarah from Ribbon Whirls for Boys & Girls in Australia created this for her family. This dessert table was inspired by the Pete Townsend song, “Let My Love Open The Door”.  Since we love music here, we fell for this idea. Sweet treats included chocolate keys, heart shaped cake pops, macarons, heart cookies, and foiled hearts. Nice job, Sarah!
