New Column: Turn Your Closet into Confections

By: Amy Atlas, in Sweet Styling Tricks

Today at Sweet Designs, we’re starting a new column: Turn Your Closet into Confections.  Since today is the last day of Spring 2012 Fashion Week in New York, we thought it was the perfect time to launch it. Inspired by the beloved former Domino Magazine’s “Turn This Outfit Into A Room” column {best magazine and book ever!}, we will showcase how fashion can be translated into desserts. Since we’re inspired by textiles and fashion in our sweet styling world, we thought we’d give you inspiration on how both desserts and fashion can walk the runway.  Color, textures, patterns, shapes, and volume can all influence how a dessert is designed, and we hope you are inspired to create desserts from wardrobe classics.

For today’s first column, we’re showcasing a big trend that we saw in New York this fashion week: Neon. Everyone from Nanette Lepore to Christian Siriano to Jason Wu sported neons on the runway.  Those bright colors brought me right back to grade school, when I was sporting neon rubber bangles and headbands.  Not quite like the beautiful pieces above.  Let’s see if we start to see neon details on cakes and desserts soon.

PS – We’ll be showcasing desserts in this series that have already been photographed, and desserts that we’ll call on cake designers to make for us.  If you are interested in sending over a fashion-inspired cake or dessert for this series, please feel free to send over to [email protected]
