Behind the Scenes: Travel + Balance

By: Amy Atlas, in Ask Amy, Behind The Scenes

Lisa and I at the Guthrie in Minneapolis with the Mississippi River in the background….

We were in Minnesota this past week for some meetings.  It was nice to get away from the hustle and bustle of New York City, even if it was just for two days.  Seeing lush greenery and smelling crisp clean air definitely helps me clear my mind.  When Lisa and I weren’t in meetings, we jam packed some activities to take it all in.  We had a chance to visit the Guthrie Theatre {an architectural beauty} in Minneapolis, walk along the Mississipi River, and we even made it Hudson, Wisconsin, which is just across the St. Croix River.  We also sampled candy and desserts at the Tremblay in the charming town of Stillwater, and tasted sweets at Sugar Sugar, Bread and Chocolate, and Sweets Bakeshop in St. Paul.

While it was a great business trip, it is always a struggle leaving my family, even if it is for a short time.  There are the 20 calls {no exagerration} a night from my sons who want me to come home to read to them, my sadness about not being there when they get off the bus, and the comforts of home that no hotel can provide.  My husband travels often and we high-fived each other in the airport as he came home from Kentucky and I was leaving for Minnesota.  Luckily, grandma came in to town to help with our busy schedules.  The trip 100% worth it, but I pose this question to you…What are your bittersweet balances? I’d love to hear.

For more posts on the balancing act, look here and here.  In the meantime, scroll down to see a peek of the fun sites we were able to see…

You are an inspiration to all working woman!

  • I finally had to give up travel for my primary job. My husband couldn’t handle our twins (his issue, not theirs). And I couldn’t leave them with that much worry on my heart. After one last tear-filled trip to the airport, I told my managing partner that I had to have Atlanta-based clients. Period. Fortunately for me, we’ve worked together for 14 years, and so I haven’t suffered job repercussions. While I’ve taken a temporary hit on my billable hours, I’m building my local book of business and life at home is happier. Sometimes, we have to choose imbalance to find what works for us.

  • WOW! Lovely photo shots of your vacation, Amy & Lisa! I love the bright, bold, beautiful colors of the market, stores you visited and most of all of St. Croix River. Aaahhhh! So tranquil! I love that Ferriswheel in the store. I would love to own one. 🙂

  • Don’t feel guilty, Amy. I’m more than sure that the time you spend with your loved ones is quality time! I know it’s hard not to have these bittersweet thoughts from time to time – I have them all the time, but working hard, being active and trying to find a good balance between all things – work and family – is what life and love is all about! ♥

  • You experienced perhaps our most beautiful week of the summer. It was simply gorgeous here! Glad you had a good time and hopefully you’ll be back soon.
