Today is National S’mores Day. We have lots of cute S’mores ideas for you today. We are going to kick off our homage to the delicious treat with a Sweet Talk with Rosie Daykin, the owner and creator of Butter Baked Goods. We have used Rosie’s marshmallows for many of our events and they are always a big hit! We recently tasted Rosie’s s’mores and they were too good not to share on S’mores Day. Scroll down for the Sweet Talk…
1. WAS BAKING A BIG ACTIVITY IN YOUR FAMILY?
I come from a large family but out of all the kids, I was the only baker. My mum was a great baker when we were all young and let me bake myself silly as a child. There was always lots of people around to eat up all my creations!
2. IN YOUR PRIOR LIFE (SMILE) YOU WERE AN INTERIOR DESIGNER. HOW DID YOU MAKE THE TRANSITION FROM INTERIOR DESIGNER TO BAKER?
I knew from a very young age that one day I would open a bakery but the timing had to be right for me and my family. I had practiced interior design for 14 years. Owning my own practice allowed me to work around my daughter’s schedule when she was young which was fantastic but as she got older and more independent ( she is off to University this September!), I was able to fulfill my bakery dreams and commit the time that was needed to make it a success.
3. WHAT IS YOUR BEST SELLING PRODUCT?
My bestselling product in the bakery has to be the “Homemade You Know What”. It is a giant homemade oreo. Two chocolate cookies filled with vanilla butter cream. Delicious! Across North America it is the marshmallows and s’mores.
4) HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH THE FLAVORS FOR THE MARSHMALLOWS?
I tend to create new flavors for marshmallows seasonally. Last Christmas I invented the gingerbread marshmallow as we were in the thick of holiday baking. Sometimes I am asked to work on new flavors specifically for certain retailers. I am working on a series of spice marshmallows right now for Dean and Deluca for a spice promotion they are doing. We just sent off samples of Coconut Curry marshmallows, Five Spice, Cardamon and Garam Masala. Crazy but good!
5. WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Everything inspires me. I am a very visual person. Books, people, movies, magazines, nature. My eyes are never shut. If I am feeling uninspired I know it is time to take a trip somewhere new. Walk some new streets and learn a little.
6. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE TREAT?
I don’t tend to eat a ton of the baking as I am around it all day but I can never say no to a Toasted Coconut marshmallow! I should but I can’t.
7. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
It is hard to pick one moment out of this career to highlight. There have been so many great moments but I did really enjoy getting a silver SOFI award last year for our Raspberry marshmallows! The first Fancy Food Show I went to in 2009 I noticed these little statues in some of the booths and I had no idea what they were or how you went about getting one but I knew I wanted one. They looked like little Oscar statues and I knew enough to know that they meant your product was a good one.
8. WHERE CAN PEOPLE GO TO BUY YOUR DELICIOUS TREATS?
You can get my marshmallows in stores all across North America but some of the bigger names are Whole Foods, Dean and Deluca, and Bergdorf Goodman. This fall you will be able to get them at Sur La Table and Balduccis. If you have a hard time finding them just give us a call at the bakery – 604-221-4333.
